Secret Santa with couples: how exclusions work
Partners often exchange gifts already. Keeping couples out of each other’s Secret Santa draw can spread the surprises around the group. The useful part is agreeing on that rule before anyone receives a name.
Start a free drawWhat a partner exclusion actually does
When Alex and Jamie are paired and partner exclusions are enabled, Alex cannot draw Jamie and Jamie cannot draw Alex. The rule works in both directions. Everyone still gives once, receives once, and cannot draw themselves.
Each person can have one partner in HolidayDraw. Pairing people records the relationship; the separate exclusion option decides whether that relationship affects the draw. Review both the pairs and the setting before sending.
Why you need at least four people
In a three-person group containing a couple, both partners would need to give to the third person. That would leave the third person receiving twice, so there is no valid draw. HolidayDraw requires at least four people when any partner exclusion is enabled.
Four people can support a valid draw, but fewer possible arrangements mean less mystery. For example, in a group of two couples, each person must give to someone in the other couple. Exclusions cannot promise a different recipient from the previous year.
Enter pairs by hand or import them
For a small group, add names and emails and select significant-other pairs in the people step. Check that everyone is paired with the intended person and turn on the keep-partners-apart setting.
For Excel, use First name and Email address columns plus an optional Significant other’s email column. Partner email is also an accepted header. One person can list the other’s email, or both can list each other. Partners must be in the imported list and the references must not conflict.
An import replaces the current participant list only after you review the preview and choose Replace my list. Check names, email addresses, and pairs again before creating the draw. Importing does not change a completed draw.
Know which rules are supported
HolidayDraw supports one significant-other pair per person. It does not currently support arbitrary exclusions, whole-household exclusions, or avoiding last year’s recipient. If your group needs those rules, settle on a different arrangement before drawing rather than assuming they are enforced.
Resending an invitation keeps the original assignment. It does not apply new pairing rules or redraw the group. This keeps the people already shopping aligned with the same exchange.
